The Legends of Cuban Music

June 4, 2016, 9:00-10:30 PM*
FirstWorks Plaza Stage / Kennedy Plaza

The 17-piece Afro-Cuban All Stars are a dream team of Cuba’s hottest musicians.

Musical director Juan de Marcos González, who arranged the famed Buena Vista Social Club recordings, leads a multi-generational line-up of star performers from some of the island’s most beloved bands, including Orquesta Tropicana, Los Van Van, and Sierra Maestra. This unique orchestra is dedicated to preserving and promoting the rich musical history of Cuba. Formed in the 1990s, they have toured the world showcasing the diverse influences and genres that comprise Cuban music. Over the years, many of the All Stars have gone on to become full-fledged international superstars, like Ruben Gonzalez, Guillermo Rubalcava, and Manuel “The Guajiro” Mirabal. Rooted in traditional son music, the Afro-Cuban All Stars’ performances are a celebration of the classic Cuban sound of the 1950s – but this is no nostalgia act. Their music is vital and modern, simultaneously paying tribute to the past and pointing toward the future.
