“Call this music the New Calypso Bebop”
–Wall Street Journal

If any one artist of this generation can embody the eclectic influences of the many Caribbean musical traditions, it is Etienne Charles. He is a young jazz master from Trinidad who defies easy categorization. His virtuoso trumpet playing inspired the New York Times to hail him as “an auteur” and Jazz Times to call him “a daring improviser who delivers with heart wrenching lyricism.” Charles is a student of pan-Caribbean music, as fluent in the horn riffs of New Orleans brass as he is the Spanish rhythms of the islands. It is true Creole Soul (the title of his second solo album), something that evokes familiar traditions yet remains entirely his own. As both a bandleader and sideman Charles has worked with some of the finest talents in jazz today, and played with legends like Roberta Flack, Wynton Marsalis, and “the grand master of calypso” Lord Kitchener.
