No summer festival is complete without a dash of rock ‘n’ roll. WBRU has you covered as they bring a double-dose of rock to Lupo’s Heartbreak Hotel for its Summer Kickoff party. Brooklyn indie-dance duo Matt and Kim and energetic Brit rockers The Kooks take the stage Saturday night for the hardest rocking event of the weekend.
Pratt Institute grads Matt Johnson (keyboards) and Kim Schifino (drums) released their highly anticipated debut in 2006, then proceeded to tear up the festival circuit with infectious, electro-dance grooves. Matt and Kim’s fifth album, New Glow (2015), puts a little pop sheen on their spiky, punk energy. They’ll share the stage with The Kooks, a foursome who helped to revive the jangly, guitar-driven clatter of Britpop, and went quadruple-platinum in their native UK with their 2006 debut Inside In/Inside Out. The Kooks’ sound continued to evolve with last year’s Listen, which brought elements of soul, dance and new wave into the mix with the classic guitar rock on which they made their name. Together, WBRU, Matt and Kim and The Kooks will rock the Providence International Arts Festival.
