“Sarah Ruhl’s distinctive tone and technique have quickly made her one of the most produced and most admired of young playwrights… Often in the same instant, she makes us laugh and gasp at the hideous, hilarious absurdity of life.” –The Boston Globe
Trinity Rep celebrates the Providence International Arts Festival with the world premiere of “Melancholy Play: A Chamber Musical”, written by Tony Award nominee and Brown alum Sarah Ruhl, along with prolific Public Theater (NY) composer Todd Almond. It’s the enchanting story of Tilly, a bank teller whose depression has the odd effect of making her irresistible and alluring. Everyone who meets her falls head over heels, including her tailor and even her own therapist. But what becomes of her when she stops being so sad? Trinity Rep stages this captivating new work under the direction of Obie Award winner Liesl Tommy. They will also provide a peak behind the curtain of the production during a “Lunch and Learn” on Friday, June 12. Bring your lunch and join in the conversation about the making of theatrical magic.
The cast of Melancholy Play: a chamber musical will perform selections from this delightful and quirky world premiere outdoors in the mews next to the theater. They will showcase Trinity’s mobile wagon stage, the creation of the theater’s legendary set designer Eugene Lee, who will also serve as Grand Marshal of the Festival Procession.
