A FirstWorks Arts Learning event for students

Friday, February 21, 2020, 3 PM
Classical High School Auditorium
770 Westminster St. Providence

The BBC has included Angélique Kidjo in its list of the continent’s 50 most iconic figures, and in 2011 The Guardian listed her as one of their “Top 100 Most Inspiring Women in the World”. A four-time Grammy Award winner for Best World Music Album, Kidjo’s striking voice, stage presence and fluency in multiple cultures and languages have won respect from her peers and expanded her following across national borders. Kidjo has cross-pollinated the West African traditions of her childhood in Benin with elements of American R&B, funk and jazz, as well as influences from Europe and Latin America.

The FirstWorks Raise Your Voice initiative amplifies diverse voices and celebrates difference through the performing arts. Throughout FirstWorks’ 2019-20 season, world-class artists collaborate with Rhode Island artists to foster empathy through educational and community arts engagement. Angélique Kidjo embodies the ideals of the Raise Your Voice initiative through her work as a Goodwill Ambassador for UNICEF and through her influential music and collaborations.
