Grab a beer and a delicious homemade pretzel while chatting with Chris Lashua, Artistic Director of Cirque Mechanics. Find out about his biking background, which led to a stint with Cirque du Soleil. Hear about his troupe Cirque Mechanics, who will be kicking off our FirstWorks Artistic Icons Series at The Vets on October 29 with their performance Pedal Punk.

Chris Lashua has spent his life on or around wheels. After nearly a decade of professional bicycle freestyle competitions and performance, he found himself at China’s famed “Wu Ciao” festival in 1992, where he won a bronze medal and a place on Cirque du Soleil’s Japan tour of Fascination. Chris’ obsession with wheels led him to perform inside one, a German Wheel, and as the opening act of Cirque du Soleil’s Quidam in 1996.

In 2002, Chris teamed with Aloysia Gavre in experiments using innovative aerial apparatus, eventually developing other machines showcasing the relationship between the acrobatic and mechanical worlds. Their 2004 performance of Birdhouse Factory for the Pickle Family Circus in San Francisco launched Cirque Mechanics. Their unique approach to performance, inspiring storytelling, and innovative mechanical staging has established them as a modern American circus.
