2019 marked the centenary of legendary American choreographer Merce Cunningham, a defining creative force of 20th-century dance. This poetic film traces Cunningham’s artistic evolution over three decades of risk and discovery (1944–1972), from his early years as a struggling dancer in postwar New York to his emergence as one of the most visionary and influential choreographers worldwide. A breathtaking explosion of dance, music, and never-before-seen footage, the film features interviews with company members and collaborators including John Cage and Robert Rauchenberg.

Co-produced by Rhode Island’s own Elizabeth Delude-Dix, CUNNINGHAM is proudly co-presented by FirstWorks and Brown Arts Initiative, with leading support from Jean L. Keith.
