“Best Latin Alternative Band”
If Mexican folk music and pounding Afro-Caribbean rhythms met on the streets of East Los Angeles, what would happen? The answer is Las Cafeteras, one of the hottest young bands in alternative Latin music. Las Cafeteras give the traditional Son Jarocho music of Mexico’s coastal Veracruz state a sophisticated makeover with edgy L.A. style. They sing stories of everyday people, stomp the floor with zapateado dancing, and incorporate eclectic instruments like the Caribbean marimbol and Mexican jarana and requinto guitars. Their songs – sung and spoken in English, Spanish, and Spanglish – are animated by the rousing political spirit of people searching for love and fighting for justice. Combining the heart of folk music with the attitude of urban worldbeat, the feel-good music of Las Cafeteras is equally at home on stage in a concert hall, in the streets at a protest, or outside at a festival.
