Truck art is a popular form of regional decoration in South Asia, with trucks throughout Pakistan and India featuring elaborate floral patterns and calligraphy. One of the most prominent truck artists is Haider Ali. Trained by his father from his youth, he first came to international attention in 2002 when he painted an authentic Pakistan truck as part of the Smithsonian Folklife Festival.
FirstWorks and community partners will bring Ali and fellow painter Ali Salman from Phool Patti Truck Art Team to PVDFest to create a large-scale exhibition piece and live painting performance: a truck painted and embellished bumper to bumper with symbolic murals and poetry that will represent Providence and broader Rhode Island communities.
